- Sea lilies (ウミユリ in Japanese) are invertebrate animals that live deep in ocean trenches. Unlike the related brittle stars and feather stars, adult sea lilies cannot move their bodies, so parts of dead plants and animals regularly fall on them, and that is what they eat. Of course, if a sea lily gets covered in ash (for example, from an undersea volcanic eruption), it dies, and fossils often result from this.
