Help:Your first edit

Help page

Making your first edit can be very intimidating, but it really isn't as difficult as it may seem. This guide serves as an introduction on how to edit on Sekaipedia.

Steps[edit source]

Finding an article to edit[edit source]

First, we need to find an article that has an mistake or outdated information. Here, in the Distant-Looking, but Friendly page for Ichika's page it says you get this card from selecting MORE MORE JUMP! as your starting unit, however, you need to select Leo/need. Similarly, you'll need to read the Main Story of Leo/need and not MORE MORE JUMP! Let's fix that.

Opening the editor[edit source]

The editor buttons are found near the top right of the article. (Note this may not the case if your skin is not Citizen, our default skin.) There are two buttons in the button group with a blue background. We want to click on the button with the "Edit" label and pencil icon, not the button with the "[[]]" icon. After clicking that button, we should now be in the editor.

Making an edit[edit source]

This editor works like Microsoft Word or Google Docs; just type and format as you please and it will show up exactly as you want it to! Let's change occurrences of "MORE MORE JUMP!" to "Leo/need".

Here's what it looks like after our corrections.

Saving an edit[edit source]

Saving an edit is done by clicking on the "Save changes" button in the top right. This will open up the dialogue box titled "Save your changes".

In this dialog box, we can put an edit summary, go back to the editor, review our changes, or save our changes. Let's review what we changed first by clicking the "Review your changes" button.

Reviewing our changes[edit source]

This dialogue box shows us what was removed and added. Words in red and crossed out show what was removed. Words in green show what was added. For us, we replaced the links from "MORE MORE JUMP!" and "MORE MORE JUMP! Main Story" to "Leo/need" and "Leo/need Main Story", respectively.

This dialog box helps us see what changes we made to the current version of the article easily. This also helps us make sure we made the changes we intended to make.

Let's return the main "Save your changes" dialog box by clicking on the "<" button in the top right.

Adding an edit summary[edit source]

Now we are back at the "Save your changes" dialog box. Let's add a quick summary of what the changes we made were about. This summary can be up to 255 characters long.

While it's not necessary to add an edit summary, it's helpful to future editors know what was changed in each revision without having to look at the change logs for each page. Therefore, when adding an edit summary it should reflect the changes made and not misleading. The guidelines for the contents of these summaries are pretty loose, but please do not add anything that could be insensitive or make rude comments toward others. The edit summary cannot be changed later.

Once we're done adding our edit summary, let's actually save our edit. To do this, click on the "Save changes" button.

Saving changes[edit source]

After clicking the button, the page should reload with the changes you just made. Congrats, you just made your first edit!

What should and should not be fixed[edit source]

There a couple of things that should be fixed:

  • Spelling errors
  • Grammatical errors
  • Incorrect or outdated information
  • Poorly worded paragraphs

The main things that should not be fixed are fan translations by @pjsekai_eng. As we are mainly a wiki that focuses on the Japanese server, we choose to use the fan translations by @pjsekai_eng, even if an official translation exists. Part of this is to be consistent throughout the wiki and another reason is to spend less time on finding broken links from pages moving around.
