Leo/need is an all-female band consisting of childhood friends.

Background

The members of Leo/need were once childhood friends. However, a certain incident occurred during middle school and their relationship became strained.

One day Hoshino Ichika discovers a song named "Untitled" on her phone. Upon playing it, she is transported to Sekai. There she meets Hatsune Miku who welcomes her to Sekai and invites her to sing together.

Sekai

The School Sekai is a Japanese school in late afternoon, created by Ichika, Saki, Shiho, and Honami's true feelings. Miku and Luka await their arrival, practising their instruments.

Visitors always enter in the main classroom, which has desks and chairs stacked and pushed against the wall, a star chart drawn on the blackboard, and musical instruments for each human and Virtual Singer member. The Sekai extends beyond this main classroom into an entire school, including a rooftop area where the time of day shifts to night and the stars are visible. Also mentioned to be within the school is a music room. No students reside in the school, other than the members of Leo/need.

In Episode 19 of the Leo/need main story, the time of day changes to night when the members reconcile and play needLe for the first time. In Episode 20, the time of day in the School Sekai shifts back to late afternoon, and has remained that way since.

Background of the Classroom Sekai.

Music

The music designated to Leo/need in-game lean toward the J-rock genre, and use the band's instruments of electric guitar, electric bass, acoustic drums, and synthesizer or piano. The members do not dance in live shows and 3D MVs, instead playing their instruments.

In-universe, the Ichika and Saki collaborate to produce their own music for performing at live shows. Ichika writes lyrics, while Saki composes. Ichika is the lead vocalist of Leo/need, with the other three members providing backing vocals or occasionally being featured as a lead vocal.
